KOCHI: There are indications that the Cochin University Alumni Association office bearers may face legal action in the UAE for hosting Pakistani cricketers. The CUSAT B.Tech Alumni Association (CUBAA) hosted a reception for Pakistani players Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul during their "Orma Chuvadukal 2025" dance program on May 25 at the PAD (Pakistan Association Dubai) Hall on Oudh Mehta Road in Bur Dubai. Although they expressed regret when the news came out in the national media, the problem may not be solved very fast.

The organization explained that Afridi and Umar Gul, who had come to a program in another hall in the Pakistan Auditorium, gate-crashed the CUBAA program without an invitation. The phones of the CUBAA office bearers have been switched off after the program became controversial. They have also frozen their social media accounts, including Facebook. The alumni forum has also gone silent. The website has also been made private. CUBAA is led by a committee headed by president Vivek Jayakumar, and general secretary Adarsh Nassar.

Cochin University has also denied the organization. They also clarified that the official alumni organization of the university is the CUSAT Alumni Association (CAN).

Organizations including ABVP have filed a complaint with the central government demanding action against those who welcomed Afridi, who is known to be anti-India. The office bearers are afraid that the organizers and their families will be put under surveillance by central agencies in the country.

Strict rules, CUBAA will face legal action

• Organizations must have the approval of the UAE Community Development Authority (CAD). Few have this.

• Although the All Kerala College Alumni Forum (AKCAF), which represents alumni organizations of about 100 colleges in Kerala, has the approval, it was CUBAA that organized the event.

• The presence of a VIP from another country at an event of an Indian organization is also a problem.
