NEW DELHI: The arrest of 22-year-old influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli kicked a storm in the political arena of the country. BJP blamed the ruling TMC in West Bengal for stifling the freedom of youngsters for political appeasement. Opposition parties, in the meanwhile, demanded strict action against people hurting religious sentiments.

Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi demanded a new law that could give up to 10 years of jail term for people making statements that hurt religious sentiments. BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut supported Sharmistha and compared the government in Bengal to that of North Korea.

“The law student apologised for her indecent remarks. She used some words which may seem vulgar but are quite often used in conversation among youngsters today. It is no big deal. Concerted efforts under the auspices of the Bengal government are ongoing to destroy a young career. This should not happen.” Said Kangana.

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the Trinamool Congress is targeting Hindu voices.

'Has any action been taken against MP Mahua Moitra for making derogatory remarks about Goddess Kali? No action was taken against party MP Sayoni Ghosh for making bad remarks about Mahadev.”

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said that some party MPs who mocked Sanatana Dharma have not apologized or been arrested.
