KASARGOD: The DGP has ordered a probe into the arrest and imprisonment of two men who were wrongly accused of possessing MDMA, which later turned out to be kalkkandam (white rock candy). The arrest was carried out by the Nadakkavu police. The DGP has directed the Kozhikode City Police Commissioner to have the matter investigated by an officer not below the rank of DYSP and to submit a report.
Biju Mathew, a native of Kolichal in Kasaragod, and Manikandan, a native of Vaaram in Kannur, were arrested after the sweet was seized. They spent 151 days in jail. They were released only after lab test results proved that the seized substance was not a narcotic drug.
Biju Mathew stated that he and his friend Manikandan were apprehended by the DANSAF (District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force) while they were out for tea in Kozhikode in the morning. The officers then searched their bodies and pockets. The sweet (kalkkandam) was found in one of their pockets. They explained to the officers that it was just something they had bought from a shop. However, the officers responded by claiming, "This is something else." They were even willing to undergo a blood test to prove their innocence.
