THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: IMD has warned of heavy rains in Kerala in the coming days. The warning says that winds of up to 60 kmph are also possible along with very heavy rains. IMD has informed that strong winds with a speed of 40 to 50 kmph are likely in isolated places on June 11 and 12 and 50 to 60 kmph from June 13 to 15. Rain is likely in all districts of Kerala today.
There is a threat of cyclone in the South China Sea. A cyclonic circulation has formed in the Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is gradually gaining strength in the Arabian Sea. Therefore, it has been informed by IMD that there is a possibility of heavy rain again in the next 78 days on the west coast of Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra, including Kerala.
Caution
There is a possibility of accidents due to trees falling and branches breaking off in strong winds.
Under no circumstances should one stand under trees when there is wind and rain. Do not park vehicles under trees.
Dangerous branches of trees in yards should be cut down. Inform the relevant local bodies if dangerous trees are noticed in public places.
Unsecured billboards, electric posts, flagpoles, etc. are also likely to fall in the wind. Therefore, they should be properly strengthened or dismantled when there is no wind and rain. Do not stand under or near these or park vehicles when it is raining and windy.
Tools and other objects that are likely to fall in the wind, such as ladders leaning against walls or other objects, should be tied with ropes.
As soon as the wind starts blowing, the windows and doors of the houses should be closed. Do not stand near the windows and doors. Avoid standing on the terrace of the house.
Those living in thatched, sheeted or unsecured houses should contact the authorities (at 1077) in advance and move to safe buildings as per their instructions during the warning period.
Local self-government bodies, revenue officials and people's representatives should take the initiative to shift such people identified under the Local Body Level Disaster Mitigation Plan to relief camps at the required stages.
When the wind and rain become strong, there is a high chance of power lines and posts falling. If anyone notices any such accident, immediately inform the KSEB control room at 1912 or the District Disaster Management Authority control room at 1077. Avoid repairing the faults during the windy period and carry out the work only after the wind and rain have stopped. The public should cooperate with KSEB employees patiently. The public should not go out and do such repair work themselves.
