THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More polling booths will be set up in cities and densely populated areas at convenient locations for voters, said P Pawan Kumar, Deputy Director (Media Wing) of the Central Election Commission. He was in Kerala to review the activities related to electoral reforms.
Chief Electoral Officer Dr Ratan U Khelkar said that 6500 new booths will be included in Kerala in the wake of the maximum number of voters in a polling station being limited to 1200. This will be implemented ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. 59 new booths have been included in the Nilambur by-election.
Currently, there are 1500 voters in a booth. The process to adjust it to 1200 will be completed within a month. No new locations will have to be found for this. Additional booths can be set up in places like schools and colleges that have been designated as polling booths.
Mobile counter
Deposit counters will be set up near polling booths to store voters' mobile phones. This will be implemented in the Nilambur by-election. Phones will be kept switched off and stored at the counter. Token system will be introduced.
