THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Torrential rains have triggered widespread destruction across several parts of the state. Many low-lying areas are submerged, and floodwaters have entered numerous homes. With river levels rising sharply, authorities have advised residents living near riverbanks to remain vigilant.
In Wayanad, heavy downpours lashed Chooralmala, a region previously affected by landslides. Several low-lying areas across the district are currently waterlogged, and rivers, including the Kabani are in full spate. The shutters of the Banasura Sagar Dam are scheduled to be raised at 10 AM today, officials said.
In Ernakulam, areas like Kalady, Eloor, Aluva, Kothamangalam, and Paravur reported flooding in multiple homes, and several bridges have gone underwater. The shutters of the Bhoothathankettu Dam have been opened. Twenty-four families have been relocated to four relief camps in the district.
In Kunnathunadu Taluk, one house was completely destroyed and another was partially damaged due to the rains yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission has issued a yellow alert for rivers including the Pampa (Pathanamthitta), Thodupuzha (Idukki), and Chalakudy (Thrissur), warning of potential rising water levels.
No leave for Revenue Officials for 3 days
With the monsoon intensifying and emergency situations escalating, the Land Revenue Commissioner has instructed District Collectors not to grant leave to revenue department staff for the next three days.
Officials are directed to camp at their assigned duty locations or within their jurisdiction, and those involved in transfers or promotions who have not yet been relieved may only be released after June 29, the circular states.
