KOLLAM: The Child Welfare Committee and the Child Rights Commission will inspect the school today in connection with the electrocution of the 13-year-old boy. The boy identified as Midhun of Thevalakkara Boys HS was electrocuted after he came in contact with a three-phase power line when climbed the roof of a cycle shed to take the slipper that had fallen there.


The authorities have informed the power line that electrocuted the student will be changed by Monday. The Director of Public Education will submit a detailed report on the incident to Education Minister V Sivankutty. Reports said the headmistress of the school will be suspended. The Sasthamcotta police had registered a case of unnatural death in the incident. The police will inspect the school again today. The statements of the school authorities will also be recorded.


The accident occurred around 9.15 am on Thursday when he was playing with his friends. He was electrocuted while trying to retrieve a slipper that had fallen onto the roof of the cycle shed on the school compound.


Hearing the screams of his classmates, the physical education teacher who rushed to the spot broke the wooden planks, climbed onto the shed and tried to save him using a plank, but was unsuccessful. With the help of more teachers, Midhun was separated using a bench. Although he did not suffer any burns, he died after being taken to the Sasthamcotta Taluk Hospital.


Midhun is the eldest son of Manu of Manu Bhavan in Vilanthara and Suja. His mother is abroad working as a home nurse. His relatives had informed her of his death through a video call yesterday. Suja is expected to reach tomorrow. His body will be laid to rest after that.
