NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court expressed dismay over the way a Malayali lawyer addressed former Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma as ‘Varma’. Justice Yashwant Varma is now facing impeachment over the discovery of a stash of currency notes at his official residence. Malayali lawyer Mathews Nedumpara demanded that the court urgently consider a petition seeking registration of an FIR in the incident.
Chief Justice B.R. Gavai asked if he was a friend of the Justice to call him Varma. The CJI also reminded that Justice Varma was still the presiding sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court. In a response, the Malayali lawyer said that the Judge did not deserve the title. He also asked that the petition be listed. The Supreme Court, in a response, asked the lawyer not to give orders.
This is the third petition filed by Mathews J. Nedumpara. The Supreme Court had not intervened in the previous two petitions.
