NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has expressed shame over the increasing instances of brutal crimes against women in the country. The observation was made by a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, referring to a horrific incident in Odisha where a 15-year-old girl was burned alive by three individuals. The incident took place on July 19.
The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association, seeking measures to ensure a safe living environment for women, children, and transgender persons. The bench noted that such incidents continuing to occur are deeply unfortunate and disgraceful. The court emphasised the need for steps to empower schoolchildren, domestic workers, and children in rural areas. It also urged the central government and others to propose necessary measures. The matter will be taken up again next week.
