THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A case was registered against Dr. Rajeev Kumar of the General Hospital for medical negligence after a guide wire ended up stuck in the chest of a woman patient. A case was charged by imposing IPC 336, 338. Dr Rajeev Kumar is the sole accused in the case.

Sumayya (26), a native of Tholikottukonath, Kattakada, had earlier filed a complaint with the police, demanding that a case be filed against the doctor after her surgery ended up botched. The case was registered after this. Meanwhile, the Director of the Health Department announced that treatment will be provided free of cost to the woman to remove the guide wire.

The woman's relative also filed a complaint alleging that the doctor took money before the surgery. It is reported that the doctor took money to prioritise the surgery over other commitments. The transaction was done through Google Pay. The relatives had released an audio recording of Dr. Rajeev Kumar admitting to the mistake on Thursday. The surgery took place in March 2023. Subsequently, when the patient with low calcium developed epilepsy and could not get a vein, a central line was inserted to give blood and medicine. A PG trainee doctor, with just three months of experience working in the hospital, placed the central line on the woman instead of providing anaesthesia.

It was during April 2025 that the woman found the guide wire stuck inside her chest. The Health Department Secretary called the woman and her relatives to pacify tensions. An expert committee was also formed. Experts from Sree Chitra examined the patient and assured that the incident is unlikely to pose any health trouble.
