MALAPPURAM: A protest has erupted over an incident in which students recited RSS Ganageetham during a school assembly held on Independence Day at a school in Malappuram. The incident took place at the KHMH school in Alathiyur, Tirur. After the video footage of the program surfaced, several organisations launched protests against headmistress M Bindu. Education Minister V Sivankutty has sought a report regarding the incident. The Deputy Director of Education has been directed to conduct an investigation and submit a report.

Teachers said they were unaware that the song was a Ganageetham, as the students had learned it from YouTube. The video, filmed by other students, spread through WhatsApp groups before being shared on social media with a caption. Following this, organisations such as DYFI, Youth Congress, and SDPI staged a protest at the school by barging into the office of the headmistress. The groups dispersed after the headmistress assured that action would be taken.

A PTA meeting was held at the school on Tuesday afternoon. In a statement, the school clarified that the children had picked up the song online and promised that an inquiry would be conducted and necessary action taken. In her report to the deputy director, the headmistress noted that the matter came to her attention only after the protests.

“This was not a deliberate act. The video has been removed from the school’s page. This is a school that has always performed well in all areas. We will remain cautious to ensure such incidents do not happen again,” said PTA president N. Gafoor.
