Kerala sarees are in the highest demand during Onam. Girls getting ready for Onam events wearing Kerala sarees and adoring the Malayali look is a beautiful sight. History says that Kalyanikutty Amma, the wife of Ayilyam Thirunal, was the first Malayali woman to be photographed in a Kerala saree. That was in 1865.
Many models of set sarees are available in the market during Onam. Kerala sarees are available in many designs and various types of fabrics, including Puliyilakara Set Mundu, set sarees with gold and silver borders. But after Onam, women usually fold the saree and put it in the cupboard. They will think about it only during the next Vishu or Onam. It must be noticed that Kerala sarees can quickly deteriorate if not taken care of properly.
It is always best to dry clean a Kerala saree after use. If there is a small stain on the saree, immediately rub it gently with a cotton pad dipped in a little water. Those who wash their sarees with detergent should be careful to completely remove the detergent from the saree. It is good to dip cotton sarees in starch to keep them stiff. After washing and drying, do not store the saree in a plastic bag or in a closed cupboard. It should be stored in a well-ventilated spot. Otherwise, the colour of the saree may fade.
