ALAPPUZHA: The modern footbridge built across the Punnamada Lake at the Punnamada starting point is bringing relief to more than 600 families. Apart from being a mere footbridge, the bridge is also becoming a selfie point for the youth due to its unique construction. For centuries, 625 families in the Nehru Trophy village, surrounded by water, depended solely on ferry boats.
The bridge was built at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore under the AMRUT project in the urban transport sector. Rs 2.04 crore of this was borne by the state government and the municipality. The central share is Rs 1.46 crore. About 3,000 people on the island have long relied on ferries to go anywhere from hospitals, educational institutions, collectorates, municipalities, workplaces, courts, etc. It is hoped that the construction of the bridge for large vehicles, which is in progress at Punnamada, will put an end to the miserable life in the Nehru Trophy ward.

With the arrival of the bridge, there is a new life in the entire village. We can reach the city very quickly. Once the bridge for vehicles is completed, our big problem will be solved"
