KATHMANDU: Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned Tuesday afternoon after protests by Gen Z continued for the second day. There are reports that Sharma Oli will be shifted to a safe place. His official residence was set on fire by the protesters. Lakhs of youngsters (Gen Z), angry over the ban on social media, took to the streets against the government.
Protesters set fire to the houses of ministers. 20 people were killed and 250 injured in the protests yesterday. Following the incident, Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav resigned from his post as a minister stating that he was unfit to serve in the government.
Protesters are not ready to end the agitation despite lifting the ban on social media platforms. The social media ban was lifted in Nepal last night. The social media ban was imposed in the name of national security. The protest, which started in Kathmandu, has now spread across the country.
Meantime, the Nepal government has announced an inquiry into the protest. A special committee has been appointed to investigate the riots. The government has also asked the committee to submit a report within 15 days. Information and Communications Minister Prithvi Shobha Gurung has appealed to the youth to withdraw from the protest.
However, he said that he has no regrets about the decision to ban social media. After the Gen Z protest flared up, it was decided to lift the social media ban in an emergency cabinet meeting.
