CHENNAI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay received a bomb threat after the stampede that claimed the lives of 40 people in Karur. The Chennai police got the message last night saying that a bomb had been planted at his Neelankarai residence in Chennai. Following that, the police team and the dog squad reached the place and conducted a detailed examination. They could not trace anything even after a detailed search. Security has been tightened around his residence. Apart from the local police, the CRPF has also been deployed at his house.

The Tamil Nadu police have not yet arraigned Vijay, who organized the rally that led to the death of 40. The government is likely to raise the issue in the court today. If the court directs, a case will be filed. It is also expected that the court will file a suo motu case. Meantime, the police have registered a case against TVK state general secretary Bussy Anand, joint secretary C T Nirmal Kumar and Karur district secretary Mathiyazhakan for culpable homicide.


Kavin (32) of Karur, who had sought primary treatment at the hospital on Saturday following the incident, died yesterday. As soon as reaching home from the hospital, he suffered a chest pain and by the time he reached hospital, he had lost his life. With this, the total death toll has reached 40. 111 people are under treatment.


Vijay, who suspended his rally following the tragedy, is staying at his residence in Chennai. He is to hold rallies at 31 centres in Coimbatore and Nilgiris. Meanwhile, he has sought police permission to visit Karur. The petition filed by TVK in the Madras High Court seeking an independent investigation into the tragedy will also be considered today. The petition alleged a conspiracy in the incident.
