NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on the Chief Justice of India B R Gavai in the Supreme Court. He spoke to Chief Justice B R Gavai and said the incident has angered every Indian. The Prime Minister's response was on social media.
‘Spoke to Chief Justice of India B R Gavai. The attack on him in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such despicable acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable,’ the Prime Minister posted on X.
There was an attempt to hurl a shoe at the Chief Justice during a Supreme Court sitting. A 71-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishor tried to hurl a shoe at the Chief Justice. He was heard shouting, ‘Hindustan will not tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma.’
The incident happened at 11.30 am yesterday, just after the bench consisting of Chief Justice B R Gavai and Malayali Judge K Vinod Chandran began the court proceedings. While the lawyers were mentioning the cases to list quickly, Rakesh Kishore moved to the dais. He was caught by the security personnel as he was about to throw his shoe at the Chief Justice.
The lawyer shouted apologizing to Vinod Chandran and said that he targeted Gavai. The Chief Justice responded that this would not affect him and that he could not be distracted. The court proceedings continued as usual.
Gavai said no case should be registered against him. After the Registrar General of the Supreme Court informed that there was no need for action, the police released him. His shoes were also given back.
However, the Bar Council of India had suspended the lawyer. He cannot practice until this is withdrawn. Supreme Court Advocates on Record Organizations like the Association, Bar Association, All India Lawyers Union, Indian National Congress, and CPM condemned the attack.
