THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: S. Sumayya, a native of Killi in Kattakkada, has been discharged from the hospital with the guide wire still stuck in her chest. Speaking to the media, Sumayya said she came to the hospital with great hope but is leaving with sadness. She added that if she is not given proper compensation and a government job, she will go ahead with legal action.

Doctors told her that since both ends of the guide wire are attached to blood vessels, it is better not to remove it, and that it will not cause health problems in the future.

Doctors at the Medical College Hospital tried on Friday to remove the guide wire that has been inside her body for the past two and a half years, but the attempt failed. They tried to insert a catheter to hook and pull the wire out, but it did not detach from the body. Even after two attempts, the procedure was unsuccessful.

The guide wire, about 70 centimetres long, runs from below the neck to the abdomen. It is attached to parts near the neck and stomach. Doctors avoided pulling it out forcefully because it could either break or damage the nerves it is stuck to.

The guide wire was inserted in 2023 after Sumayya’s thyroid surgery, to give calcium through a vein.
