KOZHIKODE: The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Kerala’s first organ transplant hospital, the Organ and Tissue Transplant Institution, coming up at Chevayoor, has been submitted to the Health Department.
The architectural designs for the institute and the renovated Dermatology Hospital, along with the master plan for the hospital campus, were prepared by HLL Infratech Services Limited, the implementing agency. The transplant institute will be set up on 20 acres within the Chevayoor Dermatology Hospital compound, using Rs 643.88 crore from KIIFB funds. The process of obtaining technical approval through KIIFB is in progress. The project will be executed in three phases — Rs 400.21 crore for the first phase, Rs 183.41 crore for the second, and Rs 18.52 crore for setting up a 33 kV power supply. The Revenue Department has completed the land survey, and the process to lease the land for 30 years is underway.
Six-storey building complex
The institute will consist of four blocks with six floors each. It aims to bring all organ donation and transplant-related activities under one roof. In addition to hospital facilities, the institute will also focus on research, training, and teaching. A total of 510 beds are planned — 219 general beds, 42 special ward beds, 58 ICU beds, and 83 HDU beds, along with 16 operating theatres, a dialysis centre, and a transplantation research centre.
Temporary facilities ready
To start operations temporarily, arrangements have been made in the PMSS Block of Kozhikode Medical College. A project office has also begun functioning. The institute’s special purpose vehicle, HEIGHTS, has been given approval to purchase medical equipment, with an allocation of Rs 14.40 crore for this purpose.
