IDUKKI: The torrential rain is continuing unabated in Idukki, causing severe damage and destruction in the hilly terrain. After the water level in the catchment area of ​​the Mullaperiyar dam rose by 5.75 feet in 24 hours, 13 spillway shutters of the dam were raised. Four shutters of the Kallar dam were also raised. Houses and farmlands on the banks of the river were flooded. A tempo traveller parked on the road near the Kallar River in Nedumkandam Koottar was swept away.

A farmland in the Kattappana Kunthalampara was washed away by a sudden landslide. Hundreds of houses and shops were flooded in Nedumkandam, Kootar, Kallar, Thookupalam, Kumily Town and Vandiperiyar. As per locals, the estimated financial losses suffered on Saturday would surpass lakhs. The Idukki sub-collector was tasked with coordinating the disaster relief operations.

Due to the influence of the cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea and the beginning of the Thulam month, rain has intensified in Kerala, mostly in the northern districts. The wind speed along the Kerala coast is currently between 45 and 65 kilometres per hour. This may increase. There is a possibility of heavy rainfall in the coming hours. The Disaster Management Authority has warned the public and government agencies to be extremely vigilant.
