KUMILY: The water level in the Mullaperiyar dam is rising further following the heavy rainfall in Idukki overnight. The water level has crossed 139 feet due to the increased flow into the dam. Currently, 13 spillway shutters have been opened. 9403 cubic feet of water is being released per second. The Tamil Nadu Water Authority has clarified that in the current situation, the spillway shutters will have to be raised further.
The shutters will have to be raised from one meter to 1.5 meters. The Tamil Nadu Water Authority has announced that 10178 cubic feet of water will have to be released per second. Concerns have been raised in the residential areas where water flows from the dam. Water has started rising in all the low-lying areas.
One person died after he lost control of his bike amidst heavy rain and crashed into a soil mound in Kumily last night. P. M. Thomas (Thankachan -66) of Parappalil house in Vellaramkunnu died in the incident. The accident occurred while he was going home after closing the shop. The scooter did not notice the dirt and stones lying on the road due to the heavy rain and crashed. Water entered Kumily and the surrounding areas and houses.
