KOCHI: Abhinand is a little Messi on the football ground.. But without assistance, he struggles even to eat food. Despite this, his ball control and passing skills amaze everyone watching. On the ground, he makes people forget that he is a child with a physical disability- proving that life is meant to be conquered, not feared. Abhinand, a 15-year-old from Paravur in Kannur, is a Class 10 student at Mathamangalam Government Higher Secondary School.
Abhinand was nine years old when his parents noticed unusual trembling in his right hand. Medical examinations revealed the early stages of a genetic movement disorder (genetic coronia). Gradually, his hand and leg movements weakened. However, Abhinand loved watching his elder brother play football. Recognising his passion, his father KK Sajikumar started taking him to a nearby ground so he could play with other children.
Started playing football, became healthy
Playing football brought a huge positive change in Abhinand’s health and personality. Last year, he was part of the football team in the inclusive sports category at the School Olympics. Though he later fell ill with a high fever, he still participated in the stand-up jump event and won third place before returning home.
This year, determined to improve his football skills, Abhinand came to Thiruvananthapuram with his father. He will represent the Kannur team in the Under-17 inclusive football competition on Wednesday. His mother is Soumya, and his brother is Nandu.
