KOCHI: A late-night drunken brawl ended in violence in Thrikkakara as five private mall security guards were arrested for allegedly assaulting a police team and fracturing the arm of a Circle Inspector. The arrested individuals have been identified as Akshay (25) of Wayanad, Jineesh (38) of Kollam, Ajmal (20) and Althaf (21) of Thiruvananthapuram, and Shamsudeen (36) of Nenmara. Law enforcement has booked the group for physical assault on police personnel and obstructing public servants from discharging their duties. The altercation unfolded around 12:30 AM on Saturday near Unichira. According to local sources, the suspects were consuming alcohol at their rented apartment and creating a loud disturbance. When the rowdy behavior began troubling the neighborhood, the apartment's caretaker alerted the local police. An initial police team dispatched to the scene was quickly surrounded and confronted by the aggressive youths. Recognizing the escalation, Edappally Traffic East Circle Inspector (CI) Udayakumar rushed to the spot to defuse the situation. However, as officers attempted to detain the unruly group, a violent scuffle ensued. It was during this melee that CI Udayakumar sustained a severe bone fracture to his arm. The situation was eventually brought under control after a backup police contingent arrived at the scene and subdued the five men using necessary force. The suspects were subsequently shifted to the Kalamassery Medical College Hospital for a mandatory medical and sobriety examination. Investigators confirmed that stringent legal action is being processed against all the accused.
