Snake bite claims lives of two young girls in Kerala

KOCHI: An 11-year-old girl who had been undergoing treatment after a snake bite died on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Nia Lenin, a resident of Aroor.

The incident occurred on May 6 while Nia was on her way to a dance class. She initially felt something bite her on the leg but assumed it was an ant bite and did not suspect a snake attack.

However, within an hour, she lost consciousness and developed severe health complications. She was rushed to a private hospital in Ernakulam and admitted to the intensive care unit. Despite 24 days of intensive treatment, Nia succumbed to her condition at around 7.30 a.m. on Sunday.

In a separate incident, a 13-year-old girl from Nenmara in Palakkad district also died after undergoing treatment for a snake bite. The victim, Rajeshwari, was the daughter of Raman and Ambika.

She was bitten by a cobra while playing inside her house about two weeks ago. No one else was at home when the incident occurred. Several hours later, her paternal uncle and his wife returned from work and found the girl unconscious, with foam coming from her mouth. She was immediately taken to a hospital and had been receiving treatment ever since. Rajeshwari's condition turned critical on Sunday, and she later succumbed to the effects of the snake bite.
