Operation Lotus completed! Mamata Banerjee loses from Bhawanipur to Suvendu Adhikari
KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost the West Bengal assembly elections from the Bhawanipur constituency. Mamata lost by more than 15,000 votes to her old confidante and present BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. The defeat of the Chief Minister, who is also a sitting MLA in a Trinamool stronghold, hammered the final nail in the coffin of Trinamool Congress.
This is the second consecutive time that Mamata Banerjee has lost the assembly elections. In 2021, Mamata Banerjee had contested against Suvendu in Nandigram. But after a tough fight, Mamata conceded defeat by 1956 votes. Mamata then won the by-election from the Bhawanipur constituency and remained as the Chief Minister.
However, with BJP sweeping the state in 2026, Mamata had no chance in Bhawanipur. The BJP made progress in 207 out of 294 constituencies. However, the Trinamool's progress was limited to just 80 seats.
