Muslim League eyes five ministerial posts in government; Kunhalikutty, Basheer, Shamsudheen to become ministers
MALAPPURAM: The Muslim League is expecting five ministerial posts, similar to its share in the Oommen Chandy cabinet. While a ministerial berth for P K Kunhalikutty is almost certain, competition within the party is intensifying for the remaining four positions.
Leaders under consideration include N. Shamsudheen (Mannarkkad), P. K. Basheer (Ernad), K. M. Shaji (Vengara), Parakkal Abdulla (Kuttyadi), M. A. Razak (Kundamangalam), and A. K. M. Ashraf (Manjeshwaram). Among them, Shamsudheen and Basheer are almost confirmed.
Both have been elected as MLAs for the fourth time. Basheer was also in charge of the party’s Wayanad rehabilitation efforts. There is also a demand to consider K M Shaji, who is seen as close to M K Muneer, especially in his absence. If that happens, Malappuram district could get three ministers. There are discussions about giving one ministerial post to the Kozhikode district, which has six MLAs, while Kasaragod, with two MLAs, may be given the Deputy Speaker post.
One among Kozhikode district president Razak and state secretary Abdulla is likely to be selected. Despite defeating T.P. Ramakrishnan and becoming the party's first woman MLA, Fathima Thahliya may not be considered. However, there is curiosity over whether party state president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, known for taking unexpected decisions, might favour her. Sadiq Ali Thangal said that ministerial positions may reflect changes suited to the times.
Party not to make claim for Deputy Chief Minister post The party is unlikely to make a public claim for the Deputy Chief Minister post. The Industries and IT portfolios are expected to go to Kunhalikutty. The League may also retain portfolios such as Local Self-Government, Public Works, and Social Justice.
Within the Congress, there is a view that the Health portfolio should be given to the League, while Congress may take over Education. However, the League is open to giving up Education if it is offered a key department like Revenue.
