Sizzle continues: Life disrupted in Kerala as 12 districts face dangerous temperature spikes

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts in Kerala as temperatures continue to climb. Experts warn that the heat may intensify further, staying 2 to 3°C above normal through Sunday.

Temperature forecast

Due to the combination of high heat and humidity, most regions—excluding hilly areas—are expected to experience oppressive and unsettled weather. The projected highs are:

• Palakkad: 40°C
• Kollam: 39°C
• Kottayam: 38°C
• 37°C Forecasted for: Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Health advisory & safety measures

Health Minister Veena George has urged the public to remain vigilant. To minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses, the following guidelines have been issued:

• Avoid Direct Sunlight: Stay indoors between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, when the UV index and heat are at their peak.
• Protect Vulnerable Groups: Children, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with pre-existing health conditions require special monitoring.
• Adjust Work Schedules: Outdoor laborers and those working in direct sunlight should shift their hours to the early morning or late evening.
• Seek Medical Help: If you experience dizziness, extreme fatigue, or signs of heatstroke, seek medical attention immediately.
