Pinarayi, Govindan should change their functioning style; demand raised during CPM state secretariat meeting
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sharp criticism was raised against the functioning style of CPM state secretary M V Govindan and Politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan during the CPM state secretariat meeting, with several leaders reportedly calling for a more cautious and responsive approach from the party leadership.
Sources indicated that some leaders even demanded Govindan’s resignation from the post of state secretary. The defeat in the party’s strongholds was described as a serious matter that needs detailed examination. Members also reportedly criticised Govindan for not showing enough caution in organisational matters and said this should be reviewed through self-criticism within the party.
During the discussion, some members pointed out that although there were no corruption allegations when Pinarayi Vijayan was Chief Minister, there was a perception of favouritism. They said certain people took advantage of the tendency to defend close associates regardless of their mistakes. According to the members, this damaged the Chief Minister’s image among the public and negatively affected the party in the election.
Leaders also demanded that higher-level committee members should not interrupt discussions in lower committees citing a lack of time. They said party leaders must listen fully to the concerns of workers. CPM General Secretary M A Baby reportedly accepted this demand.
It was also suggested that district committee meetings discussing the election setback should continue for two days to allow detailed discussions. Members said the practice of limiting speaking time should be changed and that the feelings and opinions of the public must be openly discussed within party committees. They also stressed that party members should have the freedom to criticise anyone within the organisation.
However, in its official statement, the state secretariat said the discussions were not aimed at blaming individuals. It stated that the party had unanimously decided to examine its shortcomings and correct them. The leadership also expressed confidence that the party could overcome the defeat through proper review and corrective measures. The statement further accused some sections of the media of trying to weaken these decisions and create the impression that there are big differences of opinion within the party.
