UDF in high spirits; League joins CM debate

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After receiving favourable predictions in eight exit polls, the UDF is eagerly waiting for the election results to be announced on Monday. If the predictions hold true, the UDF is likely to return to power after a gap of 10 years. Apart from a few isolated claims questioning the exit polls, the LDF camp is largely remaining silent. The BJP has also refrained from strong reactions.

Within the Congress, the discussion over the Chief Minister’s post, which had earlier caused internal tensions, has now shifted following the exit poll results.

Muslim League state president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal openly stated that the support for V. D. Satheesan as Chief Minister reflects public sentiment. In recent days, discussions have centred around Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala, and K. C. Venugopal. Supporters of these leaders had actively voiced their opinions, especially on social media, leading to heated debates. The party high command tried to control the situation, but arguments continued online.

In a departure from usual practice, Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal clarified his position, apparently to prevent internal rifts within the Congress that could embarrass the UDF. Following his statement, Youth League state vice president Faisal Bafaqi Thangal also expressed support for Satheesan. Congress leaders have not officially responded. However, sources say senior Congress leaders are unhappy that an ally expressed opinions on the Chief Minister’s post even before the results.

Favourable factors:

  1. After Congress, the Muslim League is the largest ally in the UDF, and its opinion carries significant weight. Under Satheesan’s leadership, a strong “Team UDF” was formed, leading to victories in by-elections and local body polls.
  2. Ramesh Chennithala is a senior leader, former KPCC president, and former minister. He is seen as a key figure for coordination within the alliance and has close ties with the League.
  3. K. C. Venugopal is a strong presence in the national leadership of Congress and played a key role in supporting the state leadership during the assembly elections.
