People with bone and joint pain are the most affected by the cold weather during the monsoon. When the body temperature drops, muscles become stiff and joint pain increases. Breathing cold air causes blood vessels to constrict. This reduces blood flow to the joints and muscles, leading to knee pain due to a lack of oxygen and nutrients. That is why many people experience knee and elbow pain upon waking. Physical activity through walking and yoga can help reduce pain and improve joint mobility.
To prevent joint pain
- Try to keep your body warm at all times
- Dress in layers to ward off the cold
- Get 15-20 minutes of sunlight daily to prevent vitamin D deficiency
- Eat foods rich in calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D
Bathing in warm water can help relieve discomfort. However, if the pain persists for more than three days or if there is swelling or difficulty moving, consult a doctor.
