Stalled peace talks: Iranian military signals possible resumption of hostilities
TEHRAN: Iran has signalled a potential return to open conflict with the United States, suggesting that the current ceasefire exists in name only. The Iranian Armed Forces stated that hostilities with both the U.S. and Israel are likely to resume, accusing Washington of failing to honour any existing agreements.
The statement comes amidst stalled diplomatic talks and an escalating political war of words, with no clear path toward a definitive peace treaty.
Iranian officials have publicly expressed deep scepticism regarding American motives. Mohammad Jafar, a deputy at Iran’s military headquarters, characterised U.S. statements as mere "media stunts" designed to capture headlines and prevent a drop in oil prices. He added that Iranian forces remain fully prepared to counter any move made by the United States.
While the Trump administration maintains it has no immediate plans to attack Iran, it continues to move forward with aggressive measures, including naval blockades.
During a White House press conference, President Trump admitted he was dissatisfied with the new proposals put forward by Iran for a peace deal, though he did not provide specific details. He noted that Iran's demands were "unacceptable" and that the future of negotiations remains uncertain.
Trump stated there are only two ways forward: "Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever, or do we want to try and make a deal?". He further clarified that he does not wish to destroy Iran, citing humanitarian considerations, but emphasized that the current terms are not a basis for progress.
