Chennai Super Kings crush Mumbai Indians, keep playoff hopes alive
CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings kept their playoff hopes alive with a convincing eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in their IPL clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad led from the front with a composed innings, while youngster Karthik Sharma provided strong support as Chennai chased down the target with ease.
Chasing 160, Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 67 off 48 balls, registering his second successive half-century. Karthik Sharma, introduced as an impact player, scored a brisk 54 off 40 deliveries to accelerate the chase. He finished the match in style with a boundary off Trent Boult. Urvil Patel (24) and Sanju Samson (11) were the only wickets to fall in Chennai’s innings.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians posted 160 on the board, thanks to Naman Dhir’s 57 off 37 balls. He, along with Ryan Rickelton (37), gave Mumbai a solid start in the powerplay. However, the middle order failed to capitalise. Suryakumar Yadav (21) and Hardik Pandya (18) could not convert their starts, while Tilak Varma and Robin Minz managed just five runs each.
For Chennai, Anshul Kamboj starred with the ball, claiming three wickets to put Mumbai under pressure. Noor Ahmad picked up two wickets, while Ramakrishna Ghosh and Jamie Overton chipped in with one wicket each.
With this victory, Chennai Super Kings climbed to sixth place on the points table with eight points from nine matches. Mumbai Indians, having lost seven games, remain in ninth position. Chennai will need to maintain this momentum in their remaining matches to strengthen their chances of reaching the playoffs.
