State-of-the-art facilities to house prisoners; this place in Kerala to get new jail
KOLLAM: A new special sub-jail with state-of-the-art facilities will be built in Kottarakkara. Two crore rupees have been allocated for the first phase of this jail in the state budget. An additional share from the amount allocated to the prison department may be received here. The new jail is being built in Thrikkannamangal ETC, away from Kottarakkara town. The process of allocating two acres of land owned by the Revenue Department for this jail is in the final stages of completion. The construction of the building will be expedited once the land is allocated. The sub-jail is currently functioning near Pulamon Junction.
• The sub-jail in Kottarakkara was established in 1959
• . The jail is located opposite the KSRTC bus stand, adjacent to the KIP compound.
• Currently, there is only 60 cents of land.
• It has the capacity to house 98 men and 4 women.
• However, more than two hundred criminals are currently being housed in limited facilities.
• There are a total of four cells and 12 barracks.
👉 Although it was upgraded to the status of a special sub-jail in 2013, development work could not be carried out due to space limitations. The new headquarters of the municipality is being built near the current sub-jail. The idea of a new jail was reached, considering all this.
👉 The new jail will be built with state-of-the-art facilities. Special facilities will be provided to house high-security criminals. The new special sub-jail will have extensive facilities to house those remanded from various courts and those sentenced.
Facilities are limited in Kottarakkara Special Sub-jail. There is also a space constraint. Two crore rupees have been allocated in the budget to build a new campus for the jail. The procedures will be expedited.
