Brutal harassment despite giving 11 lakhs and Scorpio car as dowry; father alleges his daughter was murdered
LUCKNOW: A 25-year-old woman died after falling from the terrace of her husband’s house in Greater Noida late Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Deepika Nagar, a native of Noida. Her family has alleged that she was brutally harassed by her in-laws over dowry demands.
Deepika got married 17 months ago. Her parents said they had spent nearly Rs 1 crore on the wedding. According to her father, Sanjay Nagar, the groom’s family had demanded a Toyota Fortuner car and Rs 51 lakh in cash. However, the family said they gave Rs 11 lakh, gold worth Rs 50 lakh, a Scorpio SUV, and furniture as dowry. Sanjay Nagar said he did not file a complaint with the police earlier as he hoped things would improve with time.
On Sunday, Deepika reportedly called her family and said that she was being assaulted by her husband and in-laws. Following this, her father and some relatives went to her husband’s house to settle the issue. Later, the family was informed that Deepika had fallen from the terrace and suffered serious injuries. Her father alleged that she was murdered. He also claimed that there were injury marks on her body.
Based on a complaint filed by the family, the police arrested Deepika's husband, Ritik Tanwar, and his father. Police said the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the report is received.
