CHENNAI: Like a Vijay movie packed with suspense, Tamil Nadu’s government formation has taken a dramatic turn. Governor-in-charge Rajendra Arlekar said Vijay does not have the required majority to form a government. He had informed it officially. Vijay had met the Governor yesterday and staked claim to form the ministry, assuring that he could prove his majority within 14 days. However, the Governor reportedly maintained that the oath-taking could happen only after proving majority support.

Vijay was invited to Lok Bhavan this morning for another round of discussions that lasted over half an hour. Speculation was rife that the Governor had given the green signal for government formation. Shortly afterwards, Raj Bhavan issued a brief statement clarifying that TVK does not have the required majority to form the government.

Following Governor’s response, TVK has intensified efforts to secure support from the CPM and the Communist Party of India. TVK leader Nirmal Kumar reportedly visited party offices directly to seek backing. Earlier, letters requesting support had already been sent to both parties. Reports suggest ministerial positions were also offered in exchange for support.

Both CPI (M) and CPI have informed TVK that a final decision will be taken after internal meetings tomorrow.

TVK currently has 112 seats. The Indian National Congress with five seats and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi with two seats has already extended support to Vijay. However, 118 members are required for a simple majority, leaving TVK four seats short at present. TVK has also reportedly decided not to approach parties aligned with the NDA for additional support.
