Kerala braces for heavy rain; low-pressure system intensifies in Bay of Bengal
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Kerala on May 14 and 15, as multiple weather systems develop over the region. According to the latest bulletin, isolated areas across Kerala and Mahe are expected to witness moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms over the next five days. Gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30–50 km/h, are also anticipated.
The surge in precipitation is attributed to a low-pressure area currently situated over the Southwest Bay of Bengal near the northern Sri Lankan coast, which is expected to intensify within the next 48 hours. Simultaneously, a cyclonic circulation persists over the Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep.
Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant against potential lightning strikes and strong winds as these atmospheric troughs move across the southern peninsula.
