MHA seeks report from Kerala government over attack on ED officials; non-bailable charges likely
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is set to seek a detailed report from the Kerala government regarding the recent attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. The decision follows an initial assessment by central authorities indicating a major security breach by the state police.
The incident occurred when a mob, allegedly comprising CPI(M) workers, intercepted and vandalised a vehicle carrying an ED team that was returning from a raid at the residence of Pinarayi Vijayan. Taking serious note of the security breakdown, ED Director Rahul Navin has also independently demanded an immediate report on the matter.
Meanwhile, the central agency has signalled a stern legal crackdown against the perpetrators. ED officials have already lodged a formal complaint at the Thampanoor police station. According to agency sources, the ED intends to press stringent, non-bailable charges against the attackers. The legal proceedings will not only address the physical assault and property damage but will also include charges of obstructing public servants from discharging their duties and attempted murder.
