IUML convenes emergency meet as frustration mounts over delayed CM choice

MALAPPURAM: The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the second-largest constituent of the United Democratic Front (UDF), has voiced strong discontent over the Congress party's delay in naming a Chief Minister for Kerala. Despite the alliance securing a decisive mandate in the recent Assembly elections, the IUML leadership warns that the leadership vacuum is beginning to overshadow the coalition's electoral success. To address the impasse, an emergency high-level meeting has been scheduled for tomorrow at 10:00 AM in Panakkad.

Senior IUML leaders, including Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal and P.K. Kunhalikutty, are expected to preside over the session. The party maintains that the ongoing uncertainty is tarnishing the brilliance of the UDF victory and causing significant unrest among the rank and file. The party leadership is reportedly taking a serious view of recent public outbursts from local leaders, including Malappuram District General Secretary P. Abdul Hameed, who have openly criticised the "High Command culture" for stalling the formation of the new government.

The meeting is expected to focus primarily on formalising a grievance to be sent to the Congress High Command, expressing the League's impatience with the week-long deliberation process. Furthermore, the leadership will deliberate on its strategy regarding ministerial berths and the allocation of key portfolios. Having secured a record-high tally of seats in this election, the IUML intends to adopt a firm, uncompromising stance during upcoming cabinet negotiations to ensure its influence is reflected in the new administration's structure.

The Congress leadership in New Delhi remains locked in a complex selection process between three primary contenders: Ramesh Chennithala, V.D. Satheesan, and K.C. Venugopal. While AICC observers have already collected feedback from the newly elected UDF MLAs, the delay in a final announcement has created a political vacuum that the IUML fears is being exploited by the opposition. The League had previously signalled its preferences to central observers, but the lack of a definitive response has now forced the party to reconsider its tactical approach within the front.
