NEW DELHI / THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Following the UDF’s resounding victory, reports suggest that AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge has proposed a compromise formula to resolve the leadership tussle between Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan and former Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala.
To avoid internal friction, Kharge has reportedly suggested a term-sharing arrangement. Under this formula, Chennithala would serve as Chief Minister for the first two and a half years, citing his seniority, followed by Satheesan for the remainder of the term.
However, the decision remains complex as Rahul Gandhi is reportedly of the view that AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal—who enjoys the backing of a majority of Congress MLAs—should not be overlooked. The final outcome hinges on whether Rahul Gandhi aligns with Kharge’s formula and how the three key contenders respond to these developments.
The central leadership remains wary that bypassing Chennithala and Satheesan in favour of Venugopal, a Member of Parliament, could trigger widespread protests and factionalism within the state unit. Such internal strife could potentially hamper the government’s functioning. Sources indicate that V.D. Satheesan has already communicated his reservations regarding Venugopal’s potential appointment to Rahul Gandhi.
Current movements of key leaders
High-level deliberations in Delhi were paused today as Rahul Gandhi travelled to Chennai for Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony, while Mallikarjun Kharge was in Bengaluru following the demise of Karnataka minister D. Sudhakar. Kharge is expected back in the capital tomorrow evening.
A final decision is likely to be announced tomorrow or the day after, following consultations with Sonia Gandhi and veteran leader A.K. Antony.
