Scooters parked in front of house set on fire in Kottayam; CCTV visuals of accused out

KOTTAYAM: Anti-social elements set fire to scooters parked in the backyard of a house in Vaikom’s Thalayolaparambu. A huge disaster was avoided as the fire did not spread to the nearby cooking gas cylinder and a car. The scooters parked in the backyard of Selvaraj, who runs a barber shop at Varikamkunnu Kavala, were destroyed in the fire. Police have taken one person into custody in connection with the incident.

Selvaraj, his mother, wife and children were at home when the incident took place. It is assumed that the vehicles were set on fire around 2.30 am on Friday. Due to the intense heat following the fire, the plastic cover on the cooking gas cylinder nearby melted, but the fire did not spread. All the documents including title deed of house and bank passbook were burnt in the fire.

Fire force arrived and extinguished the fire. A man who had come from Kollam to Varikamkunnu as a labourer got drunk and had a fight with Selvaraj the other day. It is suspected that he may behind this. CCTV visuals confirming this has also been obtained. The accused was taken into custody by Thalayolaparambu police. He is being interrogated.
