Justice Syed Abdul Nazeer retired from the Supreme Court on January 4th. It has been barely six weeks today. Today he was appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. He was a member of the bench that gave the final verdict in the Ayodhya case. His participation in the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad National Council meeting held in Hyderabad on 26 December 2021 was controversial. It is a Sangh Parivar advocacy organization.
In his speech, Justice Abdul Nazeer opined that "Indian legal system is continuously ignoring the great tradition of Manusmriti". These words lacked the high degree of impartiality and devotion to the Constitution that a judge serving on the bench should possess. Now he has got the title of Governor.
This central government move is not in line with constitutional values. The decision to appoint Justice Abdul Nazeer as Governor is highly condemnable. Justice Abdul Nazeer should reject such an offer. The country should not lose faith in the legal system. Such decisions of the Modi government are a stain on Indian democracy.
