Researcher claims that first rain in Kochi after Brahmapuram fire was acidic

KOCHI: The first rain in Kochi since the fire at the Brahmapuram plant has been claimed to be acidic by experts. In a litmus test conducted by Dr A Rajagopal Kammath, an independent researcher, the paper dipped in water collected from Vyttilla turned red. This means the water is acidic.

"The pH value of the water was between four and four and a half. Excessive exposure to acidic rain can cause health problems", Rajagopal Kammath said. The fire and toxic fumes from the Brahmapuram plant might have caused this phenomenon.

There was heavy rain with thunder and lightning in Kochi on Wednesday evening. The Pollution Control Board had warned to pay attention to the first rains after the fire. There was heavy rain in various places including Kalamassery and Kaloor. It took 12 days to put out the smoke and fire in Brahmapuram which took a toll on the air quality in Kochi and surrounding areas,
