ATK Mohun Bagan clinches ISL title after beating Bengaluru FC in thrilling penalty shootout

MADGAON: ATK Mohun Bagan clinched the ISL title by defeating Bengaluru FC in the final 4-3 in a match that went to a penalty shootout.

The game went to extra time and a shootout after the two teams were tied 2-2 after the end of extra time. Dimitrios Petratos put ATK ahead with a penalty in the 14th minute. In the injury time of the first half, Sunil Chhetri equalized the game with another penalty. In the second half, Bengaluru took the lead through Roy Krishna, however, Dimitrios' penalty in the 85th minute saw ATK extend the game into extra time.

Bengaluru FC had to field Sunil Chhetri in the second minute of the match as Shivashakti Narayanan got injured. Both teams tried to attack at the beginning phase of the match, with ATK creating better chances. While trying to clear a corner kick taken ball hit the hands of Bengaluru's Roy Krishna and a penalty was awarded which was converted by Dimitrios Petratos.

Just before the end of the first half, Bengaluru got a chance to come back into the game as the referee awarded the spot kick for a late foul inside the penalty box. Sunil Chhetri took the kick and scored the equalizer.

Both teams came back and played with intent in the second half. Liston Colaco, who came on as a substitute for ATK in the second half, created a good chance in the 60th minute but Petratos was unable to make the best out of it. In the 78th minute, Roy Krishna was able to make amends for the earlier penalty as he scored to put Bengaluru in front.

However, there was a late twist as Nassiri earned a penalty for ATK Mohun Bagan after being shoved in the back by Perez just seconds after entering the game. Petratos scored from the spot for the second time in the 85th minute to ensure that the match goes into extra time.
