THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Stray dogs with severe injuries, impossible to treat will be subjected to euthanasia. The meeting involving ministers M D Rajesh and J Chinchurani decided to move ahead with the plan. Minister Rajesh while responding said it comes under the purview of the law which suggests adopting euthanasia for wild animals that are irrevocable from diseases. The CrPC sections allow the magistrate to wield power over this decision.

The meeting also termed the reform of ABC rules redundant. The reforms took a toll on the sterilization drive for stray dogs in Kerala. The government will approach the centre for change in the laws or else will directly seek a solution from the Supreme Court.

The rules from the central government are stymying the start of ABC centres in Kerala. There are currently 20 ABC centres in the state. According to the rule, there needs to be a doctor with more than 2000 surgeries experience to start ABC centres. Such strict measures are proving a pain for acquiring permission from the Animal welfare board.

The forest department will conduct another meeting with animal lovers and will address their concerns. Meanwhile, the corporation will conduct new vaccination programs at more than 170 hotspots found in the state. The government also promised to bring 25 new veterinary hospitals in the state.
