Although price of shallot crossed 200, onion price stands at Rs 30; huge change will happen in vegetable prices within two weeks
KOLENCHERY: The price of shallot is skyrocketing in the state. The prices of shallots and garlic have crossed the Rs 200 mark. This is the first time in the year that the price of shallots has crossed Rs 200. The current sale price stands at Rs 210. Although the prices of shallots and garlic are increasing, the price of onion remains at Rs 30 per kg. Onion is the only item in the vegetable store whose price remains below Rs 50. The cost of tomatoes has come down from Rs 150 to Rs 120. The price is expected to come down further in the next two weeks. Traders believe that the price may come down sharply as harvesting has begun in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, the price of ginger is going up in the market. One kg of ginger costs Rs 360. Shallot and garlic are mainly coming from Nashik in Maharashtra. It is said that the prices have gone up after shallots in stock were washed away in the heavy rains that lashed Nashik.
Shallot is reaching the state through the Pollachi market in Tamil Nadu. At present, wet shallots packed in sacks are being delivered to the state. More than half of these are getting rotten. As a result, traders are reluctant to accept the loads. The onion price has not gone up in the state as it is being cultivated widely in Tamil Nadu.
