NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) has issued a notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for making bad remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In its notice, the EC asked Rahul to give an explanation for his 'panauti' (bad omen) remark against Narendra Modi by 6 pm on Saturday.

Rahul Gandhi made the controversial remark while addressing a Congress rally in Jalore, Rajasthan. Taking a dig at Narendra Modi, Rahul indirectly said that Modi's presence was the reason for the Indian team's defeat in the World Cup final.

During the election rally, someone from the crowd shouted the term 'Panauti' (unfortunate, bad omen). After hearing this, Rahul mocked the Prime Minister by saying, "Yes, Panauti. Our guys were playing well, they would have won the World Cup. But 'Panauti' made us lose. The TV guys won't tell you this but people know."

Following the controversy over Rahul Gandhi's remarks, the BJP came forward demanding an apology from the Congress leader. A complaint was also filed against Rahul with the Delhi Police.
