THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More details have surfaced in the incident where a woman doctor committed suicide due to depression after her marriage failed due to a dowry dispute. The relatives of the senior who proposed marriage to Shahna, a native of Venjaramood, allegedly asked for more dowry than what her family could afford. The medical college police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Shahna had known this doctor, who is a senior and a friend, for about a year. After the marriage was confirmed, Shahna's relatives informed the man's family that they would give five acres of land and a car as dowry. But he said it wasn't enough and demanded a BMW car, 15 acres of land and gold. The said person withdrew from the marriage after Shahna's family said this was not possible.

The statement of Shahna's relatives has been recorded by the police. Relatives of the woman want the man to be arrested on the charge of abetment of suicide.

In the statement given to the police, Shahna's family alleged that Shahna's marriage had been fixed at the beginning of her PG studies and the marriage ended due to a dispute related to dowry. The family also alleged that the groom's relatives came demanding a huge amount of dowry at a time when even the painting works of their house were over.

Shahna suffered from depression after the marriage broke up, her brother said. Shahna's suicide note also contained words that corroborate the accusations of the relatives. "My vapa (father) is no more, I am helpless, I have no one to give me massive dowry. Love has no price on this earth. All was for money," suicide note in Shahna's room reads.

After recording the statements of Shahna's relatives, the police will also check her mobile phone. Twenty-seven-year-old Shahna, the daughter of the late Abdul Aziz and Jamila, was a second-year PG doctor in the surgery department. Shahna was supposed to go on duty at night and she was found dead in her room during the inspection.
