Sunday 24 December 2023 12:55 AM IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the amendment of the criminal laws by the Lok Sabha, the police will have to learn new rules for filing cases, filing charge sheets and investigations. The module to train about 60,000 policemen from CPO rank onwards will be ready soon. Training will be provided at Police Academy, Training College, District Training Centers and District Police Headquarters.

The new laws are Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (IPC 1860), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (CRPC 1898) and Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita (Evidence Act 1872). Sections, which were memorized by all the policemen, will have a new number and name from now on. Training modules will be made according to how these are published in the notification.

The police should study the new rules clearly. If there is a mistake in the sections of the FIR or if there is a failure in the collection of evidence, the case will be affected and the accused may escape. The scrutiny of the FIR and charge sheet by top officials and the legal department before filing it in the courts will be tightened. Supervision will also be mandatory in the investigation of cases. Forensic officers will also have to be trained in evidence collection. Classes must be conducted by the best lawyers. With the notification of the bill, the new rules will come into effect across the country.

Digital evidence will become more important

  • As electronic records become primary evidence, digital evidence collection will become increasingly important.
  • The trial going online will reduce the workload of the police who have to bring the accused to court.
