High Court to Judicial City at Kalamassery; agreement reached at high-level meeting

KOCHI: Agreement to relocate the High Court from the congested area of Ernakulam city to the wider area of ​​Kalamassery. The 27 acres of land reclaimed by the state government from the defunct HMT is being developed into a judicial city and the High Court and its affiliated institutions are being shifted. HMT land is adjacent to Seaport-Airport Road. High Court can be reached quickly without entering Ernakulam city.

The agreement was reached at a high-level meeting attended by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and High Court Chief Justice AJ Desai. The Chief Minister informed that the meeting has formulated further steps. More land will be found if required.

The new location is 15 km away from the present High Court at Marine Drive. The site inspection in the presence of High Court judges and state ministers will be held on 17th of this month. Only after that the outline will be prepared and project amount will be fixed. Law Minister P Rajeev, Revenue Minister K Rajan, High Court Judges AK Jayasankaran Nambiar, A Muhammad Mushtaq, Bechu Kurian Thomas and other senior officials attended the meeting.

Judicial Academy

Along with the High Court, the Judicial City aims to have institutions and systems of international standards such as the Judicial Academy and Mediation Center. The National Law University, where the Chief Justice of the High Court is the Vice-Chancellor, is two kilometres away.
