Kerala's coastal beauties need to be developed for tourism

Varkala Papanaasam Beach, nestled along Kerala's coastline has secured its spot among the top 100 must-see beaches globally, according to Lonely Planet's Beach Guide Book. This recognition elevates Kerala's status in international tourism.

The selection by Lonely Planet, a revered travel publication, underscores Varkala's allure, alongside Indian counterparts Palolam in Goa and Swaraj in the Andamans. Varkala's prominence stems from its scenic beauty and cultural significance as the headquarters of Sivagiri Math, founded by renowned spiritual leader Sree Narayana Gurudeva.

The Varkala Cliffs, characterized by distinctive rock formations and salt springs add to the beach's charm. Despite longstanding tourist interest, infrastructure development lagged until recently.

In a stride towards enhancing visitor experience, the tourism department installed a floating bridge over the waves in December marking the seventh such bridge in the state.

Kerala's tourism potential extends beyond Kovalam, encompassing gems like Kappil Beach, Kozhikode Beach, Muzhapilangad and Dharmadam Beach. With strategic coastal protection, infrastructure development and enhanced facilities, Kerala aims to emerge as a premier global coastal destination.

State Tourism Minister Mohammad Riyaz has reaffirmed the commitment to developing Varkala into a world-class tourist destination aligning with ongoing efforts to bolster Kerala's tourism sector.
