Candidates rarely win elections unopposed. Remarkably, 10 BJP candidates were elected unopposed in the 2024 assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh.

Since the country's first general election, there have been uncontested victories. A total of 298 MLAs and 28 MPs have been elected in this manner so far, mostly in assembly elections. The Nagaland Legislative Assembly leads with 77 candidates winning uncontested. Umesh Rao, who won from Manjeswaram in the 1957 assembly election, is the only person to have won unopposed to the assembly in Kerala. Mostly Congress MLAs and MPs have won in this manner, accounting for 194 MLAs and 20 MPs.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Syed Mir Qasim have each won three times unopposed. Pema Khandu is notable for becoming Chief Minister after winning in this manner for both Congress and BJP. His constituency, Mukto, has had the highest number of unopposed elections, with Khandu's father and former Chief Minister Dorji Khandu winning unopposed here twice. Dimple Yadav was last elected to the Lok Sabha unopposed in the 2012 by-election in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh.
